Five Football Student-Athletes Named To D3football.com All-Region Team

NORWALK, CT - Five Christopher Newport football student-athletes were named to the d3football.com's All-South Region squad, the site announced Friday afternoon.

Running back Roland Hilliard was named First Team All-South on offense while Rob Rodriguez was named First Team All-South on defense.

Hilliard concluded his career as the school's all-time leading rusher with 3,149 yards and finished as the program's leader in total touchdowns with 32. Hilliard was a 1st Team All-USA South selection in 2006 as well. In 2006, Hilliard rushed for 1,215 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also caught 16 passes for 136 yards. Hilliard also returned a kick 95 yards for a score.

Rodriquez, a senior defensive back, became the third player in program history to be named 1st Team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association and was also selected to play in the 2006 Aztec Bowl. Rodriguez was also a 1st Team All-USA South defensive back, 2nd Team All-Conference return specialist and a preseason 2nd Team All-American selection. He finished 2006 with 25 solo tackles and totaled 36. He had three interceptions, broke-up nine passes and blocked four kicks. For his career, he finishes as the school's all-time leader in blocked kicks with 10 and interceptions with nine.

Matt Boykin took home Second Team honors. Boykin, a center from Chesapeake, VA, helped anchor the Captains offensive line that rushed for more 1,600 yards and passed for another 1,897. Boykin was a First Team All-USA South pick as a senior.

Also earning Second Team honors was defensive back Justin Long. Long, a senior from VA Beach, VA, led the team in solo tackles with 45 and finished second on the squad in total tackles with 76. He finished the year with 7.5 tackles for a loss of 21 yards, five pass break-ups, recovered two fumbles and forced three fumbles. He was also a First Team All-Conference pick. Long finishes his career second on the school's all-time interceptions list with eight.

Earning Third Team All-South honors was offensive lineman Larry Broach. Broach, also from Chesapeake, VA, was instrumental in the Captains offensive attack as he helped anchored the offensive line. Broach was also a First Team All-USA South choice.
