Football Wins USA South Sportsmanship Award
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Christopher Newport's football team is the 2006 recipient of the USA South's Sportsmanship Award, the USA South announced Tuesday.
During the 2004-2005 academic year, the USA South Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted a conference-wide Sportsmanship Award. There is a Sportsmanship Award for 12 of the 14 conference-sponsored sports. For every sport, each member votes for the teams he/she deems to have demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship throughout the season. The team receiving the most votes receives the award. The institution who wins the most individual sports awards will be presented with the overall USA South Sportsmanship Trophy. The award was developed as a result of the SAAC's commitment to maintaining a sportsmanlike environment on each campus.
One athlete who voted for the CNU football team said they "played within the rules and were courteous both during and after the game."
Other Fall Sportsmanship Award winners were Methodist for women's volleyball; Averett for men's soccer and Peace for women's soccer.
