CNU Athletics Honored By Peninsula Sports Club
HAMPTON, VA - The Peninsula Sports Club held its 57th annual Headliner’s Night Monday, and Christopher Newport was well represented.
All-America linebacker JUSTIN WOOD was honored as CNU’s Athlete of the Year. Wood led the Captains football squad in tackles each of the last four years, and became the second CNU football player to achieve All-America status.
Director of Athletics and Men’s Basketball Coach C.J. WOOLLUM received the Milestone Award from the club. Woollum has guided the CNU hoops squad the last 22 years and has recorded 444 career wins.
WAYNE BLOCK, Christopher Newport’s longtime Sports Information Director, was honored with the Moskowitz Media Award. Block has been a member of the CNU Athletic Department for the last 23 years.
In addition to the individual honors, the Sports Club also awarded the Christopher Newport Athletic Department with the President’s Award for its overall athletic accomplishments. The Captains and Lady Captains captured 12 USA South Athletic Conference team championships last year, and won the conference’s President’s Cup for the eighth time in the past nine years.
The awards were presented Monday night at the Headliner’s Award Banquet at the Holiday Inn-Coliseum in Hampton.
