NC Wesleyan Eliminates Shenandoah, 3-2
GRAHAM, NC - NC Wesleyan eliminated the Hornets of Shenandoah University in an elimination game in the USA South Conference Tournament by a score of 3-2 Friday at Graham Middle School.
Daniel Ziccardy led off the game with a walk and advanced to third on Scott Van Dusseldorp's double. David Jenkins followed by reaching on a fielder's choice, with allowed Ziccardy to score.
Van Dusseldorp exteneded the Hornets lead to 2-0 in the top of the second with his second home run of the tournament, a solo shot down the left field line.
Jason Webb led off the fifth for the Bishops by doubling down the right field line and advanced to third on an erro and scored on a wild pitch. In the sixth, Justin Batts walked and Wes Means reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Batts came around to score on Tyler Goarck's RBI sacrifice fly to knot the score at 2-2.
NC Wesleyan scored the game-winner in the Luke Williford reached on an error in the seventh and advanced to second on a ground out. He then promptly stole third and scored when Mark Wooten reached on an error.
Means finished 2-for-3 for the Bishops while Goarck was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Van Dusseldorp paced Shenandoah as he went 2-for-4.
Blake Rice tossed a complete-game for NC Wesleyan. The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out eight. David Frelin went the distance for Shenandoah as he gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits.
Shenandoah is now 20-12 while the Bishops improve to 24-14. NC Wesleyan will play Christopher Newport in an elimination game at 4:00 pm at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
