Baseball Opens Season With 10-3 Win Over Randolph-Macon
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team opened the 2006 season on an offensive note by defeating Randolph-Macon 10-3 Wednesday afternoon at Captains Park.
The Captains scored at least one run in every inning but two. They put up one each in the first and third and added two runs each in the fourth through sixth frames.
John Corbin picked up where he left off in 2005 going 4-for-5 with a solo home run, two doubles, a single and three runs driven in. Designated hitter Brad Melton finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Mike Giarrizzi was 2-for-4 with three runs driven in and made a fantastic diving catch to rob RMC of a double.
Micheal Kurbjeweit had two hits and Trae Bailey, Alex Owen, Jayson Basanes and Rob Quinn finished with one hit each.
Three pitchers threw for the Captains. Kenny Moreland pitched the first three and allowed no runs on one hit while walking none and striking out five, including the side in the third inning. Steven Mingee picked up the win, pitching the middle three frames. The senior right-hander allowed four hits, three runs, two earned while walking two and striking out three. Eben Brower closed it out allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out two.
The Captains are 1-0 and return to action Saturday as they host the 2005 runner-up, Cortland St. at Captains Park. First pitch is set for 11 am.
