Baseball Sweeps Eastern Mennonite

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team improved to 5-0 on the year as the Captains swept a double header from Eastern Mennonite Friday afternoon.

Christopher Newport won game one by a score of 9-0. CNU scored once in the first, five more in the third and three in the sixth.

The Captains were led by Trae Bailey's 2-for-2 performance with two RBIs. Alex Owen was 2-for-3 and Ryan McDougal and Eric Cole each finished 1-for-3 with two runs driven in.

Zach Hutchinson, Michael Kurbjeweit and Michael Fawley each had one hit in the win.

Brandon Berry tossed four innings to pick up his first win of the year. Berry allowed four hits, walked two and struck out four. Chad Blanchard threw two innings giving up one hit while walking and striking out one each. Cary Bruner tossed the seventh allowing just one hit.

CNU won game two 6-0 behind freshman Ian Lenda's complete-game shutout in his first start of his college career.

Lenda tossed seven complete innings allowing no runs on four hits while walking none and striking out eight.

Bailey led the offensive attack going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Fawley finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Hutchinson was 1-for-2 with two runs scored for CNU.

The Captains return to action tomorrow as they host Rowan at 11 am and Bridgewater at 2 pm.
