Baseball Falls At Home To Hampden-Sydney, 11-1 NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball squad dropped its first game of the young season Thursday afternoon to Hampden-Sydney, 11-1. Steven Mingee started for the Captains and pitched well through 3 innings, only allowing one run on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts. He couldn't work himself out of the 4 th , however, as the Tigers jumped on him the second time through the lineup. Mingee gave up 5 earned runs on 6 hits in just 3.1 innings of work. Cary Bruner provided 2.2 innings of solid relief allowing an unearned run on two hits and 2 K's. However, the rest of the way, the pitching staff gave up 7 more hits and 5 more earned runs in just 3 innings of work. The top of the order led the Tigers as Jay Lilley and John Apperson combined to go 5-for-10 with 4 RBI's and 4 runs scored. Lilley added 2 walks and 6 assists at shortstop. Jayson Hanky earned the victory with 5 innings of solid 3-hit baseball, adding 3 strikeouts. On the other side of the ball, the Captains could not get any semblance of an offense going for Coach John Harvell. After Jason Moody homered in the second inning, his second on the season, the Captains never saw another runner touch home. The pitching staff for the Tigers shut down the Captains with 10 strikeouts and just 5 hits and one run. Trey Collier led the Captains at the plate with 3 of the 5 hits in the game. CNU left 13 runners on base. CNU returns to action this Saturday as they host top-ranked Rowan (NJ). First pitch is slated for 12 pm. |
