Baseball Drops 3-2 Decision To No. 30 Salisbury

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 30 Salisbury Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt.

Andrew Baird's RBI single in the top of the second put the Sea Gulls on top 1-0. The Captains came right back in the bottom of the third and tied it when Garrett Robinson scored on a ground out by Rob Quinn.

Both teams went scored for the next four full innings. Salisbury took the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning when they scored twice. Greg Lemon's double and Alex Vitale's single plated the two Sea Gull runs in the eighth.

The Captains tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning. Ryan McDougal led the inning off with a walk. Brad Melton walked as well. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Trey Collier. McDougal came around to score on a RBI ground out by Mark Genovese.

Eben Brower tossed the first three innings for the Captains. He allowed one run on four hits and struck out four. Steven Mingee came on in relief allowed one hit in three innings while striking out one batter. Cary Bruner tossed two innings, allowed three hits, two runs, walked two and struck out one. Kenny Moreland closed the game out by striking out the side in the ninth.

For the Gulls, Nick Dunk started and tossed four innings, allowed one run on three hits and struck out one. Bryan Braine threw three innings, allowed two hits, struck out two and walked four. Dan Oleynik closed the game out for his first save, throwing two complete innings, allowing no hits and striking out one.

Salisbury was led by Colin Kraus and Vitale's 2-for-4 performance. Mark Bostwic, Baird, Nick Pegelow, and Lemon each had one hit in the win.

Christopher Newport was led by Brad Melton's 2-for-3 day. Robinson, John Corbin, and Mike Giarrizzi each had one hit.

The Gulls improve to 4-0 on the year. The Captains fall to 1-2. CNU returns to action Saturday when they open conference play in a doubleheader against Averatt at Captains Park beginning at 12 pm.
