Baseball Sweeps Conference Opener From Averett

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball swept its opening two conference games, winning 12-0 and 7-4 over Averett University Saturday afternoon.

The Captains scored five runs in the fourth and eight innings and sandwiched two runs in the seventh.

Garrett Robinson led the way going 2-for-5 with two doubles and three runs driven in. Rob Quinn and John Corbin each went 2-for-5 and Michael Kurbjeweit finished 2-for-4.

Ryan McDougal, Jayson Basanes, Trey Collier, Michael Fawley and Trae Bailey each had one hit in game one.

Kenny Moreland went eight innings, struck out 13, walked only two and allowed just three hits to pick up his second win of the year. Brandon Berry tossed a scoreless ninth in his first collegiate game. The freshman struck out one and allowed one hit.

In the nightcap, CNU fell behind 2-0 after the top of the first but bounced back to score four in the bottom of the second and would add three more in the fourth. The Cougars scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Robinson again led the way with two hits in five at-bats and drove in three more runs. McDougal and Mike Giarrizzi each went 2-for-4 and Alex Owen was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Kurbjeweit, Basanes, Matt Neal, and Quinn each had one hit.

Eben Brower tossed seven innings, allowed three runs, one earned on six hits, walked two and struck out eight to pick up his first win of 2006. Cary Bruner pitched one inning, allowed one run on two hits. Chad Blanchard pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing no hits and striking out two to pick up his first save of the year.

Christopher Newport improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the USA South. Averett drops to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Captains go for the sweep Sunday with first pitch set for 1 pm.
