Methodist Sweeps Double-Header From Baseball To Open USA South Play FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Christopher Newport's baseball team dropped a double-header at Methodist Saturday afternoon, losing by scores of 3-1 and 3-2. The double-header sweep is the sixth and seventh consecutive losses for the Captains, after opening the year with two wins. In game one, CNU lead 1-0 in the top of the second. The Captains John Corbin scored on a single down the left field line by Dave Deibler. The Monarchs tied the game in the bottom of the third and added the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fifth for the win. Garrett Robinson, John Corbin, Trey Collier, and Jason Moody each had one hit for CNU. Brian Coffey went 4 1/3 innings allowing seven hits, three runs, two earned while walking two and striking out two. Cary Bruner pitched the final 1 2/3 innings giving up one hit. In game two, the Monarchs scored first, this time in the bottom of the first to lead 1-0. The Captains would add single runs in the second and one in the third to lead 2-1. In the second, Corbin singled, advanced to second on an error and reached third on a bad throw by the Methodist catcher. Charlie Hardie plated Corbin for a sacrifice fly to put CNU on top 2-1. With two outs in the third, Moody walked and advanced to second on an error and scored on Corbin's single to center. The Monarchs tied and took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Both runs scored after the Captains got the first two outs of the inning and both runs were unearned. Robinson finished 2-for-5, Rob Quinn and Brad Melton each went 2-for-4. Corbin led the Captains going 3-for-5. Ricky Medina had one hit for CNU. Mike Cosby went seven innings allowing eight hits, three runs, two earned, walked one and struck out five. Matthew Tignor pitched a scoreless inning not allowing a hit, walked one and struck out one. CNU is now 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the USA South. Methodist is now 8-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. These two team will meet again Sunday for a 1 pm start time. |
