Baseball Avoids Sweep With A 10-6 Win At Methodist FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Christopher Newport's baseball team ended its seven-game losing streak Sunday with a 10-6 win at Methodist. The Captains offense, sluggish for the last seven games, exploded for 21 hits off of Methodist's pitching staff to break the losing streak and avoid a three-game sweep to open conference play. Each team went scoreless for the first three innings until CNU scored one in the top of the fourth. Charlie Hardie's infield hit plated John Corbin for the early lead. The Monarchs wasted no time in taking the lead by added two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. The Captains retook the lead in the top of fifth. With two outs, Brad Melton doubled home Jason Moody and Corbin to give CNU a 3-2 lead. Methodist bounced back and tied the score at 3-all in the bottom of the inning. Ricky Medina scored on a wild pitch in the top of the six to give the Captains the lead again, 4-3. The Monarchs then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh before CNU added two more in the eighth and four in the ninth. Trey Collier singled in the eighth to score Garrett Robinson and Rob Quinn, on third and Collier on second, pulled off a double steal. Quinn's run gave the Captains a 6-4 lead. In the ninth, Robinson doubled down the right field line scoring Medina and Dave Deibler for the two of the four runs CNU would score in the inning. Collier would add a RBI single which scored Robinson and Quinn would later score on a wild pitch. Methodist would add two more in the bottom of the inning for the final margin. Eben Brower started and went 6 2/3 innings, allowed 10 hits, four runs, two earned, walked none and struck out seven. Cary Bruner, solid in his first three outings, finished the game, going 2 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, two runs, his first earned runs in 11 innings, and walked one, picking up his first win of the year. Quinn finished the day 4-for-6, Corbin was 4-for-5, Robinson went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Melton also finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Collier went 2-for-6 with two runs driven in. Medina finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored. The loss for the Monarchs was their first in nine games. They are now 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the USA South. CNU is now 3-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Captains return to action this Tuesday in Fort Meyers, FL. CNU will play a double-header against Alma (MI) at 12 and 4 pm. |
