Marlins Score Game-Winner In The Ninth, Down Baseball 4-3

VA BEACH, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team dropped a hearbreaker Tuesday afternoon as VA Wesleyan scored the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 4-3.

The Captains trailed 3-2 going into the top of the ninth inning and tied it with Ryan McDougal crossing the plate.

CNU got out to a quick 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third. Mike Giarrizzi doubled home McDougal in the second and John Corbin singled in Garrett Robinson in the third inning.

VA Wesleyan scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh to go ahead 3-2.

The Captains Chad Blanchard started and tossed six innings allowing just two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out two. Cary Bruner replaced Blanchard throwing the final 2 1/3 innings to take the loss. Bruner allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two.

Giarrizzi was 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead the Captains. Corbin and Rob Quinn accounted for the other two CNU hits.

Christopher Newport falls to 3-4 overall. The Captains return to action Saturday as they travel to USA South rival Shenandoah for a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm. The games can be heard live on the internet via the Shenandoah University website.
