Baseball Drops Shenandoah, 9-5
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team used three home runs to defeat Shenandoah 9-5 Saturday afternoon at Captains Park.
The Captains, who had not hit a home run in their first 11 games, hit three long balls to defeat the Hornets and improve to 2-1 in USA South play.
Shenandoah scored once in the top of the first but CNU roared back to take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Hornets got one back with a single run in the top of the third but the Captains got that run back with a lone run in the bottom of the inning.
SU tied it with two runs in the top of the fourth but the Captains scored twice in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. The Hornets cut the lead to two with a single run in the top of the eight, but the third CNU home run came in the bottom of the eighth, a two-run shot of the bat of Michael Kurbjeweit ensured the Captains of the win.
Kurbjeweit finished 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Trae Bailey finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Parker Neal was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and Mike Giarrizzi was 2-for-3. Eric Cole was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.
Kenny Moreland tossed seven innings allowing five runs, three earned, on 11 hits while striking out six and walking two. He's now 4-1 on the mound in 2007. Ian Lenda tossed a perfect eighth while Kevin Moreland tossed a perfect ninth in relief.
Christopher Newport improves to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play while Shenandoah falls to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the USA South.
These two teams will meet again Sunday at Captains Park with first pitch set for 1 pm.
