Baseball Splits A Pair At Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team split a USA South doubleheader at Shenandoah Saturday, falling in the opener 17-5 but bouncing back to win the nightcap, 4-2.

The Hornets got to starter Kenny Moreland for 10 runs, four earned on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings while walking one and striking out five. Four Captains relievers combined for two innings, eight hits and seven runs. The game was called in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Garrett Robinson finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored. John Corbin paced the Captains going 3-for-4 with two RBI and Ryan McDougal was 2-for-4 with two runs driven in.

Five CNU errors led to six unearned runs.

In the night cap, the Captains scored twice in the top of the ninth to earn the doubleheader split. Trae Bailey scored on an error and Michael Fawley scored on an errant pick-off attempt in the ninth.

Shenandoah scored twice in the bottom of the second to get out to an early 2-0 lead. CNU scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Rob Quinn's double to left scored Bailey in the fifth and Mark Genovese's single plated McDougal in the sixth.

Eben Brower tossed a complete game gem, allowing two runs on seven hits while walking just one and striking out nine to earn his second victory of the season.

Robinson, Quinn and Genovese each led CNU by going 2-for-4. Jayson Basanes, Fawley and Bailey added one hit in the second contest.

Christopher Newport is now 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the USA South. CNU and the Hornets conclude the three-game set Sunday with first pitch set for 1 pm.
