10-Run Fifth Inning Lifts Johnson & Wales Past CNU, 16-10

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - CNU's baseball team saw its five-run lead disappear in the fifth when Johnson & Wales erupted for 10 runs for a 16-10 win Sunday afternoon.

The loss broke the Captains six-game winning streak.

CNU started the scoring off in the bottom of the first with four runs and added two more in the bottom of the second. The Wild Cats would score two in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-2. CNU tacked on a single run in the bottom of the inning, to increase its lead 7-2.

Johnson & Wales then scored 10 runs in the top of the fifth to take a 12-7 lead. The Wild Cats added a single run in the sixth to lead 13-7. The Captains cut the lead in half, 13-10, with three runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth.

JWU concluded its scoring with three more runs in the top of the ninth.

John Corbin led the Captains offense going 4-for-5 with a double, three singles, and four RBIs. Trey Collier went 2-for-5 with three runs scored, Ricky Medina finished 2-for-5, Brad Melton was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, Garrett Robinson went 1-for-5 and Jason Moody was 0-for-2 with three walks, three runs scored and two runs driven in.

Eben Brower started the game and went 4 2/3 innings allowing 10 hits, 11 runs, four earned, walked one and struck out one. Steven Mingee went 2 1/3 innings, allowed six hits, two runs, one earned, and struck out one. Bryan Coffey pitched the final two innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits and walked two.

JWU improves to 2-4 while CNU drops to 9-8. The Captains return to action Monday when they host Piedmont. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
