NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team swept a pair of games from Castleton (VT) Saturday afternoon.
The Captains won game one, 7-2. CNU scored three runs in the first , one in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning. The Spartans scored both of its runs in the second.
Rob Quinn led CNU going 2-for-3. Jimmy Marn finished 1-for-2 with two RBI, Trey Collier, Mike Giarrizzi, Mark Genovese, Jayson Basanes, John Corbin and Garrett Robinson each had one hit in the win. Robinson also stole three bases.
Kenny Moreland tossed a complete game to improve to 3-2 on the year. Moreland allowed two runs, both unearned on five hits while walking none and striking out seven.
CNU won game two, 11-1. Castleton jumped on top 1-0 with a run in the top of the third. The Captains wasted no time by scoring four in the fourth, one in the fifth and six in the sixth, highlighted by Ryan McDougal's bases loaded clearing triple.
Collier finished 2-for-3 and Michael Kurbjeweit was 2-for-3 with two runs driven in. Quinn was 1-for-3 with three runs scored and Alex Owen, Giarrizzi and Basanes each had one hit in the win.
Steven Mingee tossed six innings, allowed one run on three hits while walking three and striking out five. He is now 1-2 on the year. McDougal pitched the seventh and struck out two.
Christopher Newport is now 8-6 on the year while Castleton falls to 0-4. The Captains return to action Monday as they travel to Hampden-Sydney with first pitch set for 3 pm.
