Baseball Sweeps Castleton St.
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team swept a pair of games from Castleton St. (VT) Sunday afternoon at Captains Park.
The Captains took game one by a score of 7-1. CNU scored once in the second and sixth innings but erupted for five in the fourth.
Michael Kurbjeweit led the way for Christopher Newport going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Ryan McDougal was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Joey Martin, Trae Bailey, Michael Fawley and Alex Owen each had one hit in game one.
Freshman Bryce Morrison pitched five strong innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while walking four and striking out four to pick up his first collegiate win. Cary Bruner tossed a scoreless sixth and Steven Millerleile tossed the seventh to preserve the win.
For the Spartans, Tony DiPietrantonio was 2-for-2. Jeremy Gilcris suffered the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on nine hits in four innings.
In game two, the Captains spotted Castleton St. a 5-0 lead after the top of the first inning. CNU's staff however combined to shutout the Spartans over the next six innings. Christopher Newport scored seven times in the bottom of the fourth to earn the comeback win.
Bailey finished 3-for-4 while Mark Genovese provided a two-RBI double. Alex Owen finished 2-for-3 and Joey Martin was 2-for-4.
Jason Jenkins could not get out of the first inning as the freshman, making his first start, struggled with his control. He allowed five runs on four hits and walked three in just 1/3 of an inning. Josh Hankins, Tony Pasquariello, Josh Brinkman and Kevin Moreland combined to hold the Spartans scoreless.
Pasquariello picked up his first win in relief while Moreland tossed the final 1 2/3 innings for the save.
Joe Handy paced Castleton St with two hits in three at-bats. He also drove in two runs.
Tom Cummings pitched five innings for the Spartans allowing seven runs on nine hits to take the loss.
Castleton St. falls to 1-3 on the year while Christopher Newport improves to 15-4. CNU returns to action Tuesday as they host Randolph-Macon in a make-up game. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
