Corbin's Walk-Off Grand Slam In Game Two Gives CNU A Split With Greensboro

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - John Corbin came through when his team needed him the most Saturday afternoon sending a screaming line-drive over the right-centerfield fence with the bases loaded to win game two and give the Captains a split with Greensboro.

In the bottom of the ninth, with the score tied 4-4, Rob Quinn was hit by a pitch with one out, Trey Collier reached on a walk and Jason Moody reached on an infield single. Corbin strolled to the plate with the opportunity to give the Captains the win, and he did, when he drove Steven Augone's pitch over the right-centerfield fence for a walk-off grand slam and an 8-4 CNU win.

The Captains struck first in game two. Michael Fawley led off with a single to left field, Quinn sacrificed him to second, Collier walked and Moody singled to left to load the bases for Corbin. Corbin grounded out to first base scoring Fawley for a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, CNU would increase its lead to 2-0. Jayson Basanes walked and advanced to second on Dave Deibler's ground out. Basanes scored on Mark Genovese's double to right-center.

Greensboro then took a 4-2 lead with four runs on five hits in the top of the fifth. The only five hits Mike Cosby would give up in the game.

The Captains tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a barrage of extra-base hits. With two outs, Basanes doubled to rightfield and scored on Deibler's triple to right-center. Deibler would score on Genovese's second double to tie the game in the seventh and set up the amazing finish in the bottom of the ninth.

Corbin finished 1-for-4 with the grand slam and five RBIs. Fawley and Moody each went 2-for-5 and Genovese finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Cosby pitched a complete game to improve to 3-2. He allowed five hits, all of which came in the fifth, four runs, walked three and struck out eight.

In game one, Greensboro defeated CNU 6-1. GC scored one in the first on a solo home run off the bat of Larry Lockhart, added two more in the third and one each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Quinn, Corbin, and Deibler each had one hit for the Captains.

Bryan Coffey pitched a complete game allowing 10 hits, six runs, five earned, walked none and struck out six.

GC is now 14-8 overall and 4-1 in the USA South while CNU improves to 12-9 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

These two teams meet again Sunday at Captains Park with first pitch set for 1 pm.
