Baseball Falls at 12th-Ranked Hampden-Sydney, 3-1

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team gave up three runs in the bottom of the sixth as the 12th-ranked Tigers of Hampden-Sydney defeated the Captains 3-1 Monday afternoon.

The Captains took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning on designated hitter Mark Genovese's double that scored John Corbin. Genovese was out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple for the second out of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, HSC scored three times to back starter Jayson Hanky. The Tigers scored their three runs on four hits and one CNU error.

Corbin finished the game 2-for-3 for the Captains. Mike Giarrizzi finished 2-for-4. Genovese, Jayson Basanes, Rob Quinn and Jimmy Marn each had one hit for Christopher Newport.

Eben Brower was the tough luck loser for CNU. The senior hurler tossed six solid innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four. Ryan McDougal threw two perfect innings for the Captains, striking out three.

Hanky pitched a complete game for Hampden-Sydney, allowing one run on eight hits while walking one and striking out three.

CNU is now 8-7 on the season while the Tigers improve to 10-4. The Captains are off until this weekend as they return to action for three conference games. CNU and Greensboro will meet for two games Saturday beginning at 11 am.
