Baseball Downs Cross-Water Rival VA Wesleyan, 5-2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA - CNU's baseball team scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 win over cross-water rival VA Wesleyan Tuesday afternoon at Captains Park. John Corbin extended his hit streak to 16 games in the first inning when he blooped a single to centerfield that scored Jayson Basanes to give the Captains a 1-0 lead. CNU took advantage of two Marlin errors to score four runs to extend its lead to 5-0. Ricky Medina's ground ball to second base went through the fielder's legs that scored Trey Collier, Charlie Hardie then reached on a throwing error to put runners on first and second. After an out, Rob Quinn singled to left to load the bases and Basanes followed with a RBI walk to score Medina. Hardie went on to score on a wild pitch. Jason Moody walked to reload the bases and John Corbin drove in Quinn when he was hit by a pitch. VA Wesleyan scored single runs in each of the fifth and ninth innings. Kenny Moreland was outstanding on the mound, striking out 14 batters in eight innings of work while just walking two, allowing one run and giving up five hits to pick up his third win of the year. Quinn finished 2-for-4 and Corbin was 1-for-3 with two RBI's. Basanes and Brad Melton each had one hit. CNU is now 13-10 and the Captains return to action this Saturday when they host Averett for a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm. |
