Baseball Holds Off Greensboro, 7-3

GREENSBORO, NC - Christopher Newport's baseball team held off a late rally to defeat Greensboro 7-3 Saturday afternoon.

The Captains scored single runs in the first and third while the Pride's Jess Maloney hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second to lead 2-1.

Christopher Newport then scored three times in the top of the sixth and added two more in the top of the seventh. GC scored two more times in the ninth, but fell short.

Kenny Moreland picked up win number six by tossing 8 1/3 innings. The junior hurler allowed three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out eight. Kevin Moreland came in to get the final two outs and struck out both batters he faced.

Ryan McDougal led the way offensively by going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Trae Bailey went 1-for-3 and scored three runs. Joey Martin, Zach Hutchison, Eric Cole, Parker Neal and Alex Owen each had one hit.

The Captains improve to 16-5 overall and 4-1 in the USA South. CNU and Greensboro conclude the two-game series Sunday with first pitch set for 1 pm.
