NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team split a doubleheader with USA South rival Greensboro College Saturday afternoon at Captains Park.
The Captains won game one, 6-3. The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but CNU struck for two runs in the fifth. John Corbin's ground rule double scored Rob Quinn and Corbin came around to score on Mark Genovese's RBI single.
CNU would add three more runs in the seventh. Jayson Basanes' single to left plated Corbin and Quinn. Trey Collier's single up the middle scored Basanes to extend the Captains lead to 5-1.
Quinn's RBI double in the eighth scored Garrett Robinson to increase CNU's lead to 6-1.
The Pride would score two runs in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
Kenny Moreland was outstanding on the mound for the Captains. The sophomore hurler went eight strong innings, giving up one run on three hits while walking five and striking out 13. Ryan McDougal tossed the ninth inning allowing the Pride's two runs.
Quinn, Corbin, Basanes, and Mike Giarrizzi each led CNU with two hits. Robinson, Genovese, Collier and Trae Bailey contributed one hit in the win.
IIn the nightcap, Greensboro scored two runs in the first inning highlighted by Jess Maloney's towering home run to win game two, 4-1. The Pride would score single runs in the fourth and fifth.
CNU's only run came in the fourth inning. Corbin's single scored Robinson from second. The Captains let a golden opportunity slip through their hands. They loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out. Quinn, the batter, grounded into an inning ending double play to end the threat.
Steven Mingee went five innings for the Captains to pick up the loss. The senior from Hampton, VA allowed four runs on nine hits, walked none and struck out five. Chad Blanchard pitched well in relief, allowing three hits, walked one and struck out three.
The Captains managed just four hits, one each by Corbin, Michael Fawley, Basanes and Ryan McDougal.
CNU is now 9-8 on the year and 4-4 in conference play. Greensboro is 14-8 overall and 6-5 in the USA South. These two team will meet again Sunday for the rubbermatch of their three-game series with first pitch set for 1 pm.
