Baseball Upends Greensboro, 4-1
GREENSBORO, NC - Christopher Newport's baseball squad left Greensboro with two wins this weekend as the Captains finished off the sweep Sunday by a score of 4-1.
The Captains scored all four of their runs in the top of the seventh inning. The big hit of the inning came off the bat of Alex Owen. Owen doubled with the bases loaded to put Christopher Newport up 3-0. Owen advanced to third on the throw home. The very next batter, Joey Martin, flew out to centerfield to sacrifice in Owen for the fourth run.
The Pride scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI hit.
Kyle Baumann went 6 2/3 innings to pick up his third win of the year. Baumann allowed one run on five hits, walked two and struck out five. Kevin Moreland threw the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out one to pick up the save.
Michael Kurbjeweit was 2-for-3 while Owen finished 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Trae Bailey, Ryan McDougal and Parker Neal each had a hit in the win.
The Captains improve to 17-5 overall and 5-1 in the USA South. Greensboro falls to 12-12 overall and 1-7 in conference play. CNU returns to action Wednesday as they host VA Wesleyan at 2 pm.
