8-Run Fourth Inning Lifts Baseball Past Greensboro, 10-6

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to win the rubbermatch of a three-game series 10-6 Sunday afternoon at Captains Park.

The Pride scored two runs in the first to get out to an early 2-0 lead. The Captains answered with two runs of their very own in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. Rob Quinn's double to left scored Garrett Robinson and Quinn came around to score on Mark Genovese's RBI ground out.

Greensboro, however, answered with three more in the top of the second to lead 5-2 until the eight-run fourth by the Captains. CNU played station-to-station baseball and clubbed six hits in the inning and took advantage of an error to take the lead 10-5.

GC would tack on one run in the top of the ninth for the final margin.

Jayson Basanes led the way offensively finishing 3-for-3. Ryan McDougal was 2-for-3 with two RBI, John Corbin finished 2-for-4 and Garrett Robinson was 2-for-3. Quinn finished 1-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, Mike Giarrizzi and Trae Bailey finished with one hit in the win.

Eben Brower started for CNU and got roughed up in two innings allowing five runs on seven hits. Cary Bruner came in relief and threw very well. In five innings. the southpaw allowed no runs on three hits, walked one and struck out seven to pick up his first win of the year. Ryan O'Donnell pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits to pick up his first save.

Christopher Newport improves to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in the USA South. Greensboro falls to 14-9 overall and 6-6 in the conference. The Captains are scheduled to return to play Tuesday on the road at Bridgewater for a 3 pm start.
