Baseball Finishes Weekend Series With Averett Winning 4-1

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - CNU's baseball team completed the three-game series by sweeping Averett Sunday afternoon, defeating the Cougars 4-1 at Captains Park.

The Captains jumped on Averett started Justin Johnson (1-3) for two runs in the bottom of the first. Michael Fawley led the inning off getting hit by a pitch and advaned to third on Rob Quinn's single down the right field line. Jayson Basanes plated Fawley on a sacrifice fly to right field for the first run and Quinn latered scored on a failed pick-off attempt.

Trey Collier led off the sixth also getting hit by a pitch, promptly stole second and scored on a base hit up the middle by Brad Melton to make the score 3-1. Averett scored once in the top of the inning.

In the eighth, Ricky Medina tripled to right-center with one out and scored one batter later when Charlie Hardie, with Averett drawing in the infield, reached on an error.

Eben Brower threw six solid innings for the Captains allowing one run on four hits, walked one and struck out six to pick up his second win of the year. Kenny Moreland relieved and pitched three scoreless innings, facing 10 batters, allowed one runner to reach by an error, allowed no hits, walked none and struck out six for his second save.

Jason Moody and Melton each went 2-for-4. Medina finished 2-for-3 and John Corbin, Quinn, Basanes, and Hardie each had one hit in the win.

CNU is now 16-10 overall and 5-4 in the USA South. The Captains return to action this Friday when they travel to Shenandoah. First pitch in the single game is scheduled for 6 pm.
