Baseball Falls To Cross-Water Rival VA Wesleyan, 9-6
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team dropped a 9-6 decision to cross-water rival VA Wesleyan Thursday afternoon at Captains Park.
The Marlins struck first with a single run in the top of the third but the Captains roared back to score three in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead.
VA Wesleyan wasted no time in getting back into the game as they pushed two across to tie the score in the top of the fifth.
The Marlins took the lead for good when they scored six in the top of the sixth highlighted by C.J. Rhodes' three-run home run. Christopher Newport battled to get back into it as they scored one in the sixth and two more in the eighth, but fell short.
Ryan McDougal was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Trae Bailey finished 2-for-5 and Michael Kurbjeweit was 1-for-3 with four RBI.
The Captains used six pitchers but Josh Brinkman took the loss as he lasted just 1/3 of an inning, allowed four runs on two hits.
VA Wesleyan improves to 12-7 on the year while CNU falls to 17-6.
The Captains return to action Saturday as they host conference rival Methodist at Captains Park with first pitch set for 1 pm.
