Baseball Falls 2-1 To Methodist
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Methodist at home Saturday.
The Monarchs scored two unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Captains cut the lead in half on Mike Giarrizzi's RBI base hit in the bottom of the sixth.
Christopher Newport put two guys on with two outs in the eighth inning, but Methodist avoided giving up the tying run by inducing a fly out to end the inning.
Kenny Moreland went eight strong innings, allowed two unearned runs on six hits while walking one and striking out eight to take the loss. Methodist's Kurt Kelly pitched a complete game giving up one run on five hits, walked two and struck out three.
Alex Owen was 2-for-3 for the Captains while Joey Martin, Ryan McDougal, and Giarrizzi each had one hit.
Michael Ellsworth went 2-for-4 for the Monarchs. Matt Hunt, Seth Kivett, Billy Quinn, and Brian Halpin finished with one hit each.
Methodist improves to 17-7 overall and 4-3 in the USA South. Christopher Newport falls to 17-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
These two teams will meet again Sunday with first pitch set for 1 pm.
