Baseball Wins Series Opener At Shenandoah, 5-4 In 13 Innings WINCHESTER, VA - On a cold night, on the road, the Captains chose to play their first extra inning game of 2005, and came away with a 5-4 win to open the series against Shenandoah Friday night. CNU jumped on top of the Hornets in the second inning, 2-0. Trey Collier led off with a walk and Brad Melton followed with a two-run home run to left centerfield, his third of the year. Shenandoah took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with three runs and extened its lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh. The Captains tied the game in the top of the eighth, 4-4. Jayson Bananes led things off with a single up the middle, Jason Moody followed with a single of his through the left side, both runners moved up one base on a wild pitch. John Corbin singled to score Basanes and Moody advanced to third. Moody would score when Collier grounded into a double play. CNU scored the game-winner in the 13th. Corbin led off the inning getting hit by a pitch, Collier reached on a bunt single, putting runners on first and third, Melton reached on an infield single, loading the bases, Ricky Medina grounded into a fielder's choice, forcing Corbin out at the plate, but it was Charlie Hardie's sacrifice fly to left field that scored Collier for the winning run. Kenny Moreland got the Hornets out in order in the bottom of the inning. Mike Cosby started, going 8 1/3 innings, he allowed four runs, three earned on seven hits, walked three and struck out 12. Moreland pitched the final 4 2/3 innings, allowed no hits, no runs, walked one and struck out nine for his fourth win of the year. Moody finished the night 3-for-5, Melton went 2-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs, Hardie finished 2-for-5 with a RBI, and Corbin, Basanes, Rob Quinn, Dave Deibler, and Medina each had one hit in the win. The Captains are now 17-10 overall and 6-4 in the USA South. These two teams meet again, Saturday, for a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm. |
