Baseball Drops Doubleheader At USA South Rival Methodist
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Christopher Newport's baseball team dropped a pair of USA South games at Methodist Saturday afternoon.
The Captains lost game one 7-4 in 10 innings, after leading by as many as three. CNU scored three runs in the first. Jayson Basanes singled with the bases loaded to score two runs and Mike Giarrizzi's singled plated run number three.
The Monarchs got one run back in the third and tied it at 3-3 with two more in the sixth. CNU scored a single run in the top of the seventh on Rob Quinn's two-out single that scored Garrett Robinson.
Methodist scored one run in the ninth and won it in the 10th on a walk-off three-run home run.
Kenny Moreland started and tossed nine innings for CNU. The sophomore hurler allowed four runs on eight hits, walked none and struck out nine. Cary Bruner suffered the loss in relief. The southpaw allowed three runs, two earned on one hit.
Basanes led the way offensively for the Captains going 4-for-5 with two RBI. John Corbin finished 3-for-5. Robinson, Quinn, Mark Genovese, Giarrizzi and Kurbjeweit finished with one hit each.
The Monarchs took game two 5-0 and scored all five runs in the second inning.
The Captains manages just four hits, two by Basanes and one each from Giarrizzi and Kurbjeweit.
Chad Blanchard started took the loss, going just two innings, allowing all five runs, none earned on three hits. Ryan McDougal was solid in relief, pitching the final six innings, giving up no runs on six hits while striking out four.
Christopher Newport falls to 10-11 overall and 5-6 in conference play. The Monarchs are now 14-11 overall and are also 5-6 in the USA South.
These two team meet again Sunday for the final game of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 2 pm.
