Baseball Drops 4-1 Decision To Methodist

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball squad dropped a 4-1 decision at home to Methodist Sunday afternoon.

The Monarchs struck for three runs in the top of the third inning, but the Captains cut the lead to 3-1 with a single run in the bottom of the same inning.

MU would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Methodist took advantage of five CNU errors to go along with the 13 hits they had in the game to finish off the sweep of the series.

Christopher Newport used six pitchers in the game. Starter Kyle Baumann lasted just 1 1/3 innings, but it was Chad Blanchard, who relieved Baumann, who suffered the loss. Blanchard tossed just 2/3 of an inning, allowed two runs on one hit, walked two and struck out one.

Chris Toth picked up win number four on the year. The junior went eight innings, allowed one run on eight hits, walked three and struck out three. Fred Geisinger picked up save number five by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Ryan McDougal led the Captains with two hits in four at-bats. Zach Hutchison was also 2-for-4 and Alex Owen finished 2-for-3.

Methodist is now 18-7 overall and 5-3 in the USA South. CNU falls to 17-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The Captains return to action Wednesday when they travel to Division II Virginia State with first pitch set for 3 pm.
