Baseball Splits A Pair At Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, VA - CNU's baseball team split a pair of games Saturday afternoon on the road at Shenandoah.

The Hornets won game one, 11-3. They jumped on Captains started Bryan Coffey for six runs in the first inning and never looked back. SU would add three more fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Captains scored all three of their runs in the fourth. Jayson Basanes started the innning by singling to left field, Jason Moody struck out swinging and John Corbin then grounded out to first to move Basanes to second. Trey Collier doubled to right centerfield scoring Basanes. Brad Melton followed by hitting his second home run in as many days to left field, plating two.

Coffey was touched for nine runs, six earned in 3 1/3 innings pitched. He gave up seven hits, walked none and struck out two. Cary Bruner pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowed two runs on three hits, walked none and struck out one.

Ricky Medina was 2-for-3 in game one, Melton, Basanes, Collier, Rob Quinn and Michael Fawley each had one hit.

In game two, the Captains bounced back for a 6-4 win.

CNU jumped ahead early with two runs in the top of the first. Collier led off the game with a walk, Quinn grouned out to the pitcher, advancing Collier to second, Basanes singled to right, scoring Collier and Basanes moved up to second on a throwing error, Moody followed with a run-scoring double down the left field line, plating Basanes.

SU would score once in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 2-1. The Captains would increase their lead to 3-1 in the top of the second when Medina homered to left field.

In the fourth, CNU would add another single run, this time, Melton homered for the second time Saturday and his third in as many games to put the Captains up 4-1.

The Hornets again cut into the lead, scoring once in the bottom of the sixth to trail 4-2.

CNU would score once in the eighth, when Collier scored on a wild pitch and once more in the ninth. Fawley's pinch hit single in the ninth scored Basanes. Shenandoah would also add single runs in the eighth and ninth.

Eben Brower pitched eight solid innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walked one and stuck out a season high 11 batters, by far his best outing of the year to improve to 3-3. Matthew Tignor picked up his third save, allowing one run on two hits in the ninth.

Medina finished 4-for-4, Quinn went 3-for-5, Basanes was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Moody went 2-for-5 and Fawley and Melton each had one hit for the Captains.

CNU is now 18-11 overall and 7-5 in the USA South. The Captains return to action this Saturday when they host Ferrum College. Doubleheader action begins at 12 pm at Captains Park.
