Methodist Outlasts Baseball 10-9 In 12 Innings

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Christopher Newport's baseball team let a six-run lead slip away as Methodist came from behind to defeat the Captains 10-9 in 12 innings and complete a three-game sweep Sunday afternoon.

CNU scored on in the second and five in the third to get out to a 6-0 lead. The Monarchs cut into the lead by scoring two of their own in the bottom of the third to trail 6-2.

The Captains plated two more in the fourth to extend their lead back to six, 8-2. Methodist would begin to chip away as they scored in four consecutive frames, including two in the sixth and seventh, one in the eighth and two more in the ninth to force extra innings.

CNU's ninth run came in the eighth.

An RBI single in the bottom of the 12th gave the Monarchs the one-run victory.

The Captains managed to pound out a season-high 18 hits in the win. Mike Giarrizzi led the Captains attack going 5-for-6. Ryan McDougal was 4-for-7 with two runs scored, Michael Kurbjeweit was 2-for-5 with three RBI, Trae Bailey finished 2-for-4 with two runs driven in, Jayson Basanes was 2-for-6 and Rob Quinn finished 2-for-7.

Eben Brower started the game for CNU on the hill. The senior hurler went 6 1/3 innings, allowed six runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out three. Ryan O'Donnell tossed two innings, allowed three runs on three hits. Chad Blanchard was the tough luck looser, going three innings, giving up one run on three hits.

Christopher Newport is now 10-12 overall and 5-7 in the USA South. CNU heads to Ferrum next Saturday for a doubleheader.
