Baseball Holds Off Division II Virginia State, 10-8
ETTRICK, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team held on to defeat Division II Virginia State 10-8 Wednesday afternoon.
The Captains scored seven runs in the second inning, one more in the third and two more in the fifth to take a 10-0 lead.
The Trojans roared back with five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to cut the lead to 10-8.
Joey Martin finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Justin Neumann was 2-for-4 and Trae Bailey finished 1-for-4 with three RBI.
Brandon Berry went 4 2/3 innings, gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits, walked one and struck out five to earn the win. Bryce Morrison tossed 1 1/3 innings, Josh Hankins pitched two perfect innings and Kevin Moreland closed the game by pitching a scoreless ninth to pick up save number four on the year.
Virginia State falls to 12-23 on the year while Christopher Newport improves to 18-8. The Captains return to action Saturday as they host USA South rival Ferrum with first pitch set for 1 pm.
