Baseball Slips Past Ferrum, 3-1

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team defeated Ferrum 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Captains Park and remained in first place in the USA South standings.

The Panthers scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning but the Captains wasted no time in tying the game up as Joey Martin doubled to score Michael Kurbjeweit in the bottom of the inning.

Christopher Newport took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Trae Bailey's RBI single plated Martin for the game-winner. Zach Hutchison scored when Ryan McDougal reached base on a Ferum error.

Kenny Moreland picked up win number seven on the year as the junior right-hander tossed a complete game, allowed one run on eight hits, walked one and struck out nine.

Bailey finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and Hutchison was 2-for-3. Martin, Mike Giarrizzi, Eric Cole, Kurbjeweit and Alex Owen each had one hit for Christopher Newport.

Ferrum falls to 14-14 overall and 5-4 in the USA South. The Captains improve to 19-8 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

These same two teams conclude the two-game series Sunday at Captains Park with first pitch set for 1 pm.
