Baseball Splits USA South Doubleheader At Ferrum
FERRUM, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team split a USA South doubleheader on the road at Ferrum Saturday afternoon.
The Captains dropped a 5-4 decision in game one, surrendering two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Ferrum use an inside-the-park home run to earn the victory in game one.
The Panthers jumped on top with two runs in the fourth off starter Kenny Moreland. The Captains tied the score at 2-2 with two runs in the top of the sixth. Rob Quinn scored on an error and Ryan McDougal's single scored John Corbin.
FC went ahead with a single run in the bottom of the sixth to lead 3-2. CNU countered with two more in the seventh to go ahead 4-3. Michael Kurbjeweit scored on an error and Quinn's infield single scored Trae Bailey setting up the eighth inning and the come from behind win for the Panthers.
Bailey led the Captains going 3-for-4. Quinn finished 2-for-5 and Corbin and Jayson Basanes each finished 2-for-4.
Moreland pitched a complete game and took the loss to fall to 4-3 on the year. He allowed five runs on 12 hits, gave up one walk and struck out eight.
ICNU bounced back to win game two, 8-3.
The Captains scored four runs in the fourth and single runs in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
Mike Giarrizzi was 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs driven in. Corbin finished 3-for-4, Basanes and Trey Collier finished 2-for-5. Garrett Robinson was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Chad Blanchard was solid in tossing eight strong innings. He allowed three runs, two earned on six hits, he walked three and struck out seven. Cary Bruner pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Christopher Newport is now 11-13 overall and 6-8 in the USA South. These two teams will meet again Sunday in the deciding game of the three-game series with first pitch set for 1 pm.
