Baseball Downs Ferrum 8-1

FERRUM, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team defeated Ferrum 8-1 Sunday afternoon to take the best of three-game series 2-1.

The Captains scored the seven runs of the game. CNU struck for one run in the second when Ryan McDougal scored on an error.

Christopher Newport scored twice more in the fourth to lead 3-0. Trae Bailey's RBI single scored Trey Collier and Michael Kurbjeweit scored when Mike Giarrizzi reached on an error.

In the sixth, John Corbin's double plated Rob Quinn to give the Captains a 4-0 lead. CNU would tack on three more in the eighth. Corbin's second double scored two runs and McDougal's double also plated a run.

FC would score its run in the bottom of the inning and the Captains added one more in the top of the ninth when Corbin drove in his fourth run of the day on a RBI single.

Eben Brower went seven innings allowing no runs on five hits while walking two and striking out six. Cary Bruner threw the final two innings, allowing one run on four hits and struck out two.

Corbin was 4-for-5 with four runs driven in. Giarrizzi finished 4-for-6, McDougal and Bailey each finished 2-for-5.

CNU improves to 12-13 overall and 7-8 in the USA South. The Captains return to action Tuesday as they travel to nationally ranked Mary Washington with first pitch set for 3 pm.
