Baseball Sweeps Ferrum

NEWPORT NEWS , VA - Christopher Newport's baseball swept a doubleheader from Ferrum Sunday afternoon at Captains Park.

The Captains won game one, 3-1, behind another excellent performance on the mound by freshman Kenny Moreland (5-1) . The Sprinfield, VA native pitched a complete game (7 innings) allowing one unearned run on five hits, walked one and struck out 12.

In the fourth, CNU took a 1-0 lead. John Corbin led off the inning with a single to left field, Mark Genovese's sacrifice bunt advanced Corbin to second, Brad Melton followed with a single to right field to plate Corbin.

Ferrum tied the game in the top of the fifth but the Captains came right back and retook the lead, 2-1. With one out, Jayson Basanes singled to right, Jason Moody followed with a walk. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Corbin was then intentionally walked and Genovese executed a perfect suicide squeeze to score Basanes.

In the sixth, Ricky Medina singles to lead off the inning, Charlie Hardie followed with a single to left, two batters later, Rob Quinn singled to load the bases. This time, Basanes was the one who executed the suicide to perfection, scoring Medina.

Medina and Basanes each finished 2-for-3, and Corbin finished 2-for-2. Hardie, Melton, Quinn each finished with one hit.

In game two, the CNU bats erupted for 14 runs and 18 hits to win 14-6.

Five of the six Panther runs came via the home run ball.

CNU scored five in the first, one in the second, seven in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Corbin finished a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs, Medina finished 3-for-4 with three runs driven in, Moody was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored and Quinn was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Michael Fawley was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Basanes, Melton and Genovese added one hit each in the win.

Mike Cosby went eight innings to pick up his fourth win of the year. He allowed six runs on five hits while walking three and striking out nine.

CNU improves to 18-8 overall and 9-5 in the USA South. The Captains return to action Wednesday as they travel to VA Wesleyan with first pitch set for 3 pm.
