Baseball Downs NC Wesleyan 5-1
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team took game one from NC Wesleyan Saturday afternoon winning 5-1.
Game two was postponed and the two teams will meet tomorrow and play a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm.
The Captains took the wind out of the Bishops sails early putting up four runs in the bottom half of the first inning. With two outs, CNU put together four straight hits for two runs. Garrett Robinson walked to load the bases and Michael Kurbjeweit followed with a seeing-eye single up the middle to score two more runs.
NC Wesleyan got one run back in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-1, but CNU answered with one run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by John Corbin.
Jayson Basanes was 3-for-4 to lead the way for the Captains. Mike Giarrizzi was 3-for-5, Trae Bailey finished 2-for-3 and Ryan McDougal was 2-for-4.
Kenny Moreland tossed a complete game on the mound to improve to 5-3. Moreland allowed one run on nine hits while walking one and striking out seven.
Christopher Newport improves to 14-13 overall and evens its record at 8-8 in USA South play. The two teams will meet Sunday to conclude the three-game set. The doubleheader will begin at 12 pm.
