Giarrizzi Named Baseball Rookie Of The Year, Five Total Earn All-Conference Honors

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Christopher Newport freshman Mike Giarrizzi was named the 2006 USA South Rookie of the Year and he joined four other teammates on the All-Conference squad, the USA South announced Tuesday afternoon.

Giarrizzi, an outfielder, is second on the team in hitting with a .363 average. He's third on the team in hits with 37 and has scored 11 runs and driven in 13 and was named to the Honorable Mention team.

Earning First Team honors was pitcher Kenny Moreland. Moreland, a sophomore and a Second Team choice a year ago, is 5-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 10 appearances. He leads the team with 73 strikeouts and has allowed 57 hits in 61 innings while opponents are batting .241 off of him.

Ryan McDougal was named to the Second Team for Utility. McDougal, a sophomore transfer from Salisbury, has played in the outfield, DH'd and has also appeared in relief on the hill. He is hitting .291 with 23 hits and 13 runs scored to go along with 14 RBI. He is 0-0 on the mound with a 1.80 ERA in 15 innings pitched and leads the team with two saves. He has struck out 13 batters in those 15 innings and have held opponets to just a .224 batting average.

Earning Honorable Mention honors were John Corbin, Trae Bailey, and Giarrizzi.

Corbin, a senior first baseman, is hitting .345 and leads the team in hits with 39, doubles with eight, home runs with two and RBI with 23. He has also scored 18 runs and walked 10 times.

Bailey, a freshman shortstop, is hitting .295 with 18 hits, nine runs and drove in eight and has a fielding percentage of .926.
