Baseball Advances With Come From Behind Win Over Ferrum, 9-7
BURLINGTON, NC - Christopher Newport's baseball team trailed 6-1 after the top of the third inning and chipped away and came from behind to eliminate Ferrum 9-7 in the USA South Conference Baseball Tournament played at Burlington Athletic Stadium Thursday afternoon.
The Panthers scored two runs in each of the first three innings and combined with one CNU run in the bottom of the third, took a 6-1 win into the bottom half of the third.
The Captains scored twice and began to chip away at the five-run deficit. CNU would score one each in the fourth, fifth and eighth and pushed three runs across in the bottom of the seventh to complete the win.
Trae Bailey's solo home run proved to be the game winner after CNU pushed across to runs just one batter earlier. With runners on second and third, Michael Kurbjeweit's sacrifice fly scored Garrett Robinson. Michael Fawley, the trail runner, advanced to third on the sacrifece and then scampered home on the over throw at third. Bailey followed with his first home run.
Trey Collier homered in the eighth for an extra insurance run.
Eben Brower picked up the win going six and two-thirds innings allowing only four hits while striking out six in a relief effort. He improved to 4-2 on the year.
Mike Giarrizzi and Robinson each finished 3-for-4. Ryan McDougal and Fawley were each 2-for-5 and Collier finished 1-for-3 with two runs driven in and two runs scored. Bailey was 2-for-4 with his homer and also scored a run.
The Captains (17-15) will return to action on Friday at 3:30 p.m. against Greensboro in an elimination game.
