Baseball Splits Two At USA South Conference Tournament DANVILLE, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team defeated Shenandoah in its first game before falling to Ferrum in game two on Friday at the USA South Conference Tournament. The Captains erupted for 14 runs and 11 hits in a 14-1 win over Shenandoah. The Captains scored 10 times sending 16 batters to the plate in the second inning. CNU scored three in the fifth and once in the sixth. The game was called after the top of the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule. Ricky Medina led the offensive charge going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Rob Quinn also finished 3-for-4 but scored twice and drove in one. Jason Moody finished 2-for-3, Brad Melton was 0-for-1 officially, drove in two and scored twice. Charlie Hardie finished 1-for-3 with two runs driven in and Garrett Robinson and John Corbin each went 1-for-4. Mike Cosby pitched seven innings for his sixth win. The senior allowed one run on just three hits while walking two and striking out seven. The two walks surrendered were to the first two batters of the game and didn't allow a walk the rest of the game. With the win, CNU advanced to face the tournament's second-seed, Ferrum. The Panthers silenced the Captains bats, downing CNU, 5-0. FC's starting pitcher Ryan Cooper tossed a complete-game three-hitter while walking three and striking out six. CNU's biggest threat came in the eighth with the bases loaded and two outs and Cooper got Jayson Basanes to strikout swinging. Corbin, Moody and Hardie had one hit each for the Captains. Eben Brower tossed a complete game, allowed five runs on 12 hits, walked none and struck out 10. CNU, now 23-11, returns to action Saturday in the losers bracket as they take on NC Wesleyan at 1:15 pm. |
