Six-Run First Inning Propels Baseball Past Cross-Water Rival VA Wesleyan, 7-6
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs on five hits in the first inning to down rival VA Wesleyan 7-6 Wednesday afternoon at Captains Park.
Mike Giarrizzi led off with a single and Rob Quinn followed with a base hit. After an out and a walk to load the bases, Trey Collier's double to right field scored two runs. Garrett Robinson walked to reload the bases and Michael Fawley followed by walking as well to force in the third run. Michael Kurbjeweit's single plated two more CNU runs to increase its lead to 5-0. Trae Bailey's infield single scored the sixth run.
The Captains would go ahead 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth on Quinn's sacrifice fly to score Kurbjeweit.
But the Marlins would not go quietly off CNU starter Kenny Moreland. VA Wesleyan scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to trail 7-3. In the seventh, a three-run home run cut the lead to one, 7-6.
Moreland settled down and pitched the final two innings without giving up a run to improve to 7-3 on the year. He allowed six runs, four earned on 11 hits, walked two and struck out nine.
Kurbjeweit led the way for CNU, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Collier was 1-for-4 with two runs driven in and scored a run.
Christopher Newport is now 18-16 on the year. The Captains are back at it Thursday as they travel to Randolph-Macon with first pitch set for 3 pm.
