Baseball Falls To Lynchburg, 4-2

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Lynchburg College Monday afternoon at Captains Park.

Jon Crews homered down the left field with one out in the top of the second inning to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Lynchburg scored three more runs in the top of the sixth off starter Kenny Moreland.

The Captains cut the lead in half, 4-2 with two runs in the bottom of the same inning. Trey Collier led off the inning with a double down the right field line, Garrett Robinson followed by walking and both runners advanced a base on Michael Fawley's sacrifice bunt. Michael Kurbjeweit grounded out to score Collier and Trae Bailey's single up the middle plated Robinson.

CNU would put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the ninth but left both runners stranded as they left a total of 10 for the game.

Moreland went six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out five. Chad Blanchard pitched the final three innings in relief, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk. Of the nine outs he recorded, six were via the strikeout.

Mike Giarrizzi led the way for the Captains going 3-for-5. Bailey finished 2-for-4 with a run driven in and Collier, Rob Quinn, Robinson and Fawley each had one hit.

Christopher Newport is not 19-17 overall and the Captains hit the road Saturday as they travel to fourth-ranked Salisbury with first pitch set for 2 pm.
