Fourth-Ranked Salisbury Downs Baseball, 13-7

SALISBURY, MD - Salisbury University, the nations fourth-ranked team, defeated Christopher Newport's baseball team 13-7 Saturday afternoon.

Mike Giarrizzi led the game off by singling to right field and advanced to third on a throwing error. Jayson Basanes' RBI ground out gave the Captains an early 1-0 lead.

The Gulls, however, responded with a run in the first and two more in the bottom of the second.

In the fifth, Garrett Robinson's homer to left field cut the lead to one, 3-2. But Salisbury countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead to 6-2.

In the seventh, CNU scored two more times to trail by two, 6-4. Robinson led off with a single and stole second and came around to score on Trae Bailey's double. Giarrizzi followed Bailey's double with a single of his own to plate Bailey.

The Sea Gulls would put the game out of reach with a five-run bottom of the seventh. CNU had a chance to get out of the inning with no runs scored, but the Captains threw away a potential double play ball that would have ended the inning.

The Captains, down 11-4, would add a run in the top of the eighth on Michael Kurbjeweit's single that scored Trey Collier. Salisbury would tack on two more in the bottom of the inning to lead 13-5.

In the ninth, CNU scored two more runs on Mark Genovese's two-run pinch hit home run.

Bailey led the Captains going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Giarrizzi, Basanes, Robinson and Kurbjeweit each finished with two hits in the game.

Kevin Moreland started and went four innings allowing three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out three to pick up the loss. Brandon Berry pitched one inning, allowing three runs, one earned on three hits, Hunter West tossed two innings, giving up five runs on five hits, and Kyle Baumann pitched one inning allowing two runs on three hits.

Christopher Newport drops to 19-18 on the year. The Captains return to action Sunday, Senior Day, as they take on the Spartans of York (PA) College.
