Baseball Drops A Pair Of Games To York (PA)
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newports baseball team concluded its 2006 campaign by dropping a pair of games to York (PA) College Sunday afternoon, dropping both by a score of 5-1.
CNU finished the season with its first losing record since the 1996 campaign, a year they went 12-27 under then head coach Curt Long.
The Captains managed just two hits in game one and scored its only run on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to lead 1-0. Started and senior Eben Brower was strong through 6 2/3 innings. He walked the lead off man and then retired the next two batters before giving up a pinch-hit double that plated a run to knot the score at 1-1.
Kenny Moreland came in in relief for Brower after he hit the lead-off man in the eighth. From there, the Spartans went on to score four runs in the inning for the final margin.
Robinson was 1-for-2 with a run scored and John Corbin finished 1-for-3.
Brower went 7+ allowing two runs on six hits, walked one and struck out a season high 12 batters and finished the year 5-3 on the mound. Moreland tossed one inning, allowed three unearned runs on three hits and struck out two.
In the second game, York jumped out with a run in the top of the first and the Captains quickly tied the score in the bottom of the inning on Trey Collier's bases loaded walk.
The Spartans scored once in the second, two more in the third and added another in the sixth.
Steven Mingee started and went just three innings, allowing four runs, three earned on five hits and struck out one to fall to 1-4. Josh Hankins tossed three innings giving up one run on two hits, walked two and struck out two and Ryan McDougal threw the seventh allowing one hit.
Rob Quinn led the Captains going 2-for-3. Jayson Basanes and Mike Giarrizzi finished with one hit each.
Christopher Newport concludes the year 19-20.
