Baseball Splits Doubleheader With York (PA)

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team concluded its regular season by splitting a doubleheader with York (PA) Sunday afternoon at Captains Park.

The Captains won game one, 5-1. In the first inning, Rob Quinn led off with a single and advanced to third on a single by Jayson Basanes. Quinn scored on John Corbin's sacrifice fly to to centerfield for an early 1-0 lead.

York would tie it in the top of the third, but CNU answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Corbin reached on a throwing error with one out and advanced to second on the miscue. Jason Moody followed with a single to center scoring Corbin. Moody scored one batter later on Brad Melton's RBI double for a 3-1 lead.

The Captains would add two more runs in the fifth inning on solo home runs off the bats of Moody and Ricky Medina.

Mike Cosby went the distance in his final start in a CNU uniform. The senior southpaw went 7 innings, allowed one run on four hits, walked three and struck out nine. He finishes the year 8-2.

Moody was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Quinn finished 2-for-4 and senior Charlie Hardie, playing in his final home stand went 2-for-2.

In game two, the Spartans defeated the Captains 6-4. CNU struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Lee Kennell led off by getting hit by a pitch, senior Matt Tignor, normally a relief pitcher, saw action at second base. He struck out with one out, Corbin followed with a single, moving Kennell to second, after Moody struck out, Melton singled to center scoring Kennell for the early lead.

York tied it in the top of the second but CNU rebounded for a single run in the bottom of the inning. Medina led the inning off getting hit by a pitch, Michael Fawley followed with a walk and Hardie singled to load the bases. After Garrett Robinson lined out to first, Kennell walked to force in a run and put CNU on top 2-1.

The Spartans tied the score in the top of the fourth and added two more runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-2 lead. CNU battled back but fell short, scoring just two runs in the seventh. Robinson led off with a walk, Basanes followed with a single, after two straight outs, Moody doubled to left-center scoring both Robinson and Basanes.

Eben Brower started game two and went 4 1/3 innings, allowed four runs, three earned on six hits, walked two and struck out six and fell to 3-5 on the year. Freshman Kenny Moreland relieved him, went just an inning and two-thirds, allowed two runs on three hits and struck out one. Cary Bruner finished the game going one inning and allowing just one hit.

Corbin finished 2-for-4, Moody, Medina, Hardie, Basanes and Melton each had one hit for the Captains.

CNU concludes 2005 with a record of 25-13.
