Four Baseball Players Earn All-State Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Four Christopher Newport baseball players were named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State College Division Baseball team, the organization announced Monday afternoon.

John Corbin was named First Team All-State First baseman. Corbin, a senior from Williamsburg, VA, hit .352 with 44 hits, 20 runs, two home runs and 24 runs driven in. He was a 2006 Honorable Mention All-USA South choice and was an Honorable Mention All-State selection last year.

Three earned Second Team All-State honors. Shortstop Trae Bailey, outfielder Mike Giarrizzi and pitcher Kenny Moreland were all named to the 2nd Team.

Bailey, a freshman from Chesapeake, VA, hit .323 with 31 hits, two home runs and 14 RBI. He was also an Honorable Mention All-USA South selection.

Girarrizzi, a freshman, was the 2006 USA South Rookie of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-USA South choice. Girarrizzi led the team in batting with a ..361 average with 52 hits, 18 runs and 16 RBI.

Moreland, a sophomore, earned First Team All-USA South honors on the mound. He was 7-4 with a 3.12 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 86 innings pitched.
