Baseball's Cosby Named First Team All-State, Five Others Named Honorable Mention NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Senior pitcher Mike Cosby earned First Team All-State honors and five of his teammates were named Honorable Mention All-State, the Virgina Sports Information Directors announced Tuesday morning. Cosby, a Suffolk, VA native, finished the year 8-3 with a 2.98 ERA, 89 strikeouts and six complete games in 2005. He earned Honorable Mention All-USA South honors in 2005. He also set school records in wins with 25 and strikeouts with 370. He also led the USA South in strikeouts. Earning Honorable Mention accolades were John Corbin, Ricky Medina, Brad Melton, Jason Moody and Kenny Moreland. Corbin had an outstanding year in 2005. He hit .434 with 23 runs scored, 63 hits, 13 doubles, two home runs and 42 RBIs. He was named National Co-Player of the Week and was a First Team All-USA South selection. He led the USA South in batting and RBIs. Medina, a Fairfax, VA native, hit .305 in his senior year with 17 runs scored, 40 hits, two home runs and a .977 fielding percentage. He was a First Team All-Conference choice. Melton, the Captains designated hitter, hit .280 with 14 runs, 30 hits, and a team high six home runs to go along with 24 RBIs. He was the USA South's First Team All-Conference DH. He homered in three consecutive games at one point during the year and he was also tied for first in the conference in home runs. Moody, a senior outfielder, hit .309 with 34 runs scored, 42 hits, 10 doubles, four home runs, 21 RBIs and 12 steals. He led the team in runs scored, was an Honorable Mention All-USA South pick in 2005 and was also an Honorable Mention All-State selection in 2004. Moreland, a freshman pitcher, had an outstanding freshman campaign. The Springfield, VA native was 6-2 on the mound with a 1.52 ERA in 12 appearances, including seven starts. He finished with two saves, four complete games, one shutout, gave up 46 hits in 65+ innings pitched, walked just 14 and struck out 78 batters while opponents hit just .192 off him. He was named the 2005 USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Year and earned Second Team All-Conference honors. He is ranked 18th in the nation in ERA and tied for 17th in the country in strikeouts per 9 innings. The Captains finished 2005 with an overall record of 25-16 and 11-8 in the USA South.
