Field Hockey Captures First Ever Win Over Lynchbug, Winning 7-3
NEWPORT NEWS, VA Christopher Newport's field hockey team defeated perennial powere Lynchburg College for the first time in program history Wednesday afternoon by a score of 7-3.
The Lady Captains scored in the fourth minute on a goal by Haylie Black off a feed from Diana Golden. Ashley Traylor scored the first of her three goals in the 12th minute with Black assisting to give CNU an early 2-0 lead.
The Hornets however quickly tied the score 2-2 with a goal in the 15th and 21st minutes of the first half.
CNU would score twice more in the first half with a Lynchburg goal sandwiched in between. Rhiannon Thomasson's unassisted score in the 29th minute gave CNU a 3-2 advantage. The Hornets tied the score with 36 seconds remaining before half. But the scoring would not stop there for CNU as they scored the game's eventual winner with 19 second left in the half off the stick of Diana Golden, unassisted.
The Lady Captains would tack on three second half goals, two from Traylor and the third was score by Courtney Russ.
Christopher Newport out shot the Hornets 14-6. Ashley Whipple played the first half and Emma Stout tossed a shutout in the second half to pick up the win.
CNU is now 5-2 on the year. The Lady Captains return to action September 28 as they travel to Eastern Mennonite with start time set for 7 pm.
