Traylor And Moura Take Home Top All-State Honors

LYNCHBURG, VA - Christopher Newport field hockey player Ashley Traylor was named the State's Player of the Year while Head Coach Carrie Moura took home the Coach of the Year award, the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association released late Thursday.

Traylor, a junior attack, was a First Team All-American by womensfieldhockey.com and a Second Team choice by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. She was also a First Team All-South selection by the NFHCA. Traylor led the Lady Captains with 20 goals and 46 points.

Moura, who just completed her fourth season at the helm, led her squad to a program best 14-4 record and a bid into the NCAA Tournament. She guided her team to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Playoffs which included a 2-1 win over three-time defending national champion Salisbury in the Sweet 16.

Earning First Team honors along with Traylor were Haylie Black, Jacque Mayer and goalkeeper Ashley Whipple.

Black, a Newport News, VA native, led the team with 13 assists, tied for second on the squad with 10 goals and finished second in points with 33. Black was a Second Team All-South choice by the NFHCA.

Mayer, the first player in program history to earn All-Region honors last year, was a First Team All-American pick by the NFHCA. The NFHCA also choose her as a Second Team All-American while womensfieldhockey.com picked Mayer as a Third Team All-American. She helped lead the Lady Captains defense that allowed 20 goals in 18 games.

Whipple, a freshman, had the most outstanding season in goal in her first year in a CNU uniform. She finished 13-4 with a 1.29 goals against average while making 58 saves. She recorded double-digit saves in three games this season.

Earning Second Team honors was Diana Golden. Golden finished tied for second on the team with 10 goals, second in assists with 10 and third in points with 30. She was a Second Team All-Region selection by the NFHCA.
